Your Cat Isn’t Big Boned!
If your cat is looking rather plump around the middle don’t pacify yourself by saying he’s simply big boned! You have a responsibility to your feline friend to ensure he is a healthy weight. As it is a growing trend with humans in the UK to pile on the pounds so is it with our cats and other pets. Around fifty per cent of pets are now classed as obese or overweight and we only have ourselves as pet owners to blame.
Aside from slowing your cat down there are some serious health problems that can ensue. High blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease and poor energy levels are just a few of the weight related afflictions that can affect your cat.
In relative terms a cat putting on just one extra kilo is the equivalent of an average British woman putting on sixteen kilos! Now if I put on 16 kg I’d be down to WeightWatchers like a shot! It’s shocking to know that you could be doing so much damage to your pet out of what is often misplaced kindness. By feeding your cat a cup of milk per day you are feeding him the equivalent of 4.5 hamburgers!
If you suspect that you cat is porking on the pounds seek advice from your vet. He or she will suggest a controlled way of bringing down you cat’s weight and what type of diet you should be feeding.
