Wild Cats in Wrexham
An housing estate in Rhos, Wrexham are under siege by over 20 feral cats that are running riot throughout the streets.
Residents are keeping doors and windows closed in an attempt to stop the furry thieves stealing food and causing mayhem fouling in gardens. Enough is enough and the householders are shouting out for the council to take action.
Paul Pemberton, a local councilor commented:
“Residents are going absolutely ballistic. A single parent got a cat, neglected it and chucked it out. Since then it has bred and there is basically a quadrangle area on the estate with cats running wild. They can’t even open their windows because of the smell. The residents are suffering and the cats are suffering.”
Both the RSPCA and Cats Protection have been approached to deal with the problem but as yet they have had no success.
One householder, Enid Harrison said
“It started with one of the residents buying a male and a female cat, and they were not spayed so they started breeding. People kept complaining but all she did was throw them out and get a dog. Since then they have just bred and bred. They are feral cats and they are very hard to catch. We’ve been told we are condoning things by feeding them, but what can you do? I’ve got a garden and it is a terrible mess with all the cats. Clearly there is an issue with public health. The smell is terrible and we have had to keep our windows closed.”
Pam Andrews, another local said:
“I know other people around here who have had them come through their open windows and into their houses. They are just running wild. I know one neighbour, who has recently lost her husband. It’s been in her house and messed under the table. There have been around 20 cats running around here rampant.”
A Cats Protection representative, Gwyneth Walker advised that the rescue centre would do all they could to resolve the situation:
“I’ve spoken to Cllr Pemberton and we are going to start having a look at getting traps down there. It isn’t easy dealing with feral cats – they can be quite wily creatures. But once we have caught them we can neuter them and stop them from breeding again.”
