What Do Cats Really Want?
You may think that choosing toys for your cat is a very difficult task. Cats are so choosy and there is many a cat gimmick that lies idol in my cat’s toy box! However choosing play things for your feline friend shouldn’t be that challenging if your take time to work out what makes a cat tick and what they instinctively enjoy doing.
Cats are stalkers and hunters. They enjoy stalking and sneaking up on small prey such as mice and birds. If you find toys that can replicate this activity you are onto a winner! There are plenty of toys out there that can be used as pretend prey. The best ones I find are the ones with a handled for you to hold and then a long string with something distracting like a feather tied to the end of it. By slowly moving it along you can entice your cat to play stalk and catch!
If you don’t have the money to buy toys then be creative. Scrunch up a some paper into a ball and tie some string around it. In the same way entice the cat to sneak up and pounce on it or dangle it above your cat’s nose. Another idea is use a piece of straw and let it peep out from behind some furniture. Gently pull it back and your cat will be come fixated.
This all involves you rolling up your sleeves and playing with your cat. If you do you will reap the rewards as it’s a great bonding exercise.
