Veteran Cats

Cats that reach the princely age of ten years are considered old timers.  However be aware that some cats can live another ten or more years on top of that!

As with humans old age tend to mean health issues and you need to visit your vet on a regular basis.  Keep a close eye on any physical changes or changes in behaviour.

The most common health problems include the following:

• Increased thirst indicating a kidney or liver problem
• Arthritis causing muscle wastage and stiff joints.
• Poor appetite which may indicate dental issues
• Weight loss which can point to digestive issues
• Incontinence due to bladder disorders or cystitis
• Other such as cancer, thyroid issues or diabetes

To make life easier for your cat here some things you need to do:

  • Make sure you take your cat regularly to the vets.  Your vet can identify any early signs of illness and give you treatment options.
  • As cats get older they can’t groom themselves as well due to stiff joints and low energy so regularly brush your cat’s coat.
  • Seek out a good quality senior cat food.  A highly nutritious balanced diet is important for elderly cats.
