The World Trade Centre - uplifting story of a feline survivor

The recovery efforts after the World Trade Centre tragedy have brought deep sadness across the world although there have also been many stories of extreme bravery and survival. One of the uplifting stories following this harrowing episode comes in the form of an extremely resourceful mother cat and her kittens.

Underneath the disaster area where the World Trade Centre once stood, life was found in a forgotten basement. Rescuers discovered a blast survivor in a carton of napkins.

Curled up in the comfy box was a mother cat and even more of a surprise were the three more survivors cuddling up to the furry mound - three kittens whom she had nurtured and fed during the clear up operation following September 11th.

Instinctively the mother cat had found her way into the safe and secure area of the basement below one of the trade centre’s towers to give birth to her 3 kittens in a box of napkins, a protective, cushioned, warm area for her kittens.

They had hidden in the area for a number of weeks following the disaster that rocked America and the world.

Rescuers brought the resourceful mum and her fluffy litter out of the basement in their box to fresh air and after vets checked that the feline family were in good health they christened mother and kittens with befitting names in celebration of their survival.

Mum was christened “Hope” and the babies; “Freedom”, “Amber” and “Flag.” Vets predict a full recovery for the entire family.
