The Truth about Microchipping
Most people forget about microchipping their cat but given that cats are very apt to wander and get lost its well worth it. There are also a lot of myths around about microchipping that can put you off:
Myth 1 – Microchipping is Expensive
Although it varies from one vet to another microchipping is a relatively inexpensive at on average £16.00-20.00. You may get it cheaper than this if they are carrying out other procedures as well.
Myth 2 – It will hurt my cat
The procedure is quick and straight forward and does not require your pet to be anesthetised. The needle does look quite gruesome but when my cat had the procedure done he never flinched as they inject the chip into loose skin between the shoulder blades.
Myth 3 – There’s a chance my cat’s microchip number will be duplicated
The microchips are so advanced they hold a lot of information. Microchips are able to produce a whopping 275 billion ID numbers. To further identify the chips different manufacturers produce unique reference codes and manufacturer IDs. Therefore there is no likely chance that a cat will be issued with a duplicate number.
Myth 4 – Not many vets or shelters have a microchip reader
There are some vets and shelters that don’t have readers in the UK but in this case the cat will be taken to the police for it to be read.
