The Truth about Cats and Dogs
I have been watching of late the strange relationship forming between my ginger Tom, Tikka, and Tashi, my Shih Tzu dog. When Tashi initially arrived over 12 months ago Tikka was horrified! He glared at me in absolute disbelief, his green eyes wide in shock and fury at this new arrival. ‘How could you?!’, he seemed to say. At that point Tashi was just a small ball of fur and Tikka towered over him in comparison. However it was Tikka that would run away whereas Tashi would be overwhelmed with curiosity and would try and get the infuriated cat to play.
Unfortunately this often resulted in Tashi get swiped by the enraged Tikka. Tashi to this day has never learnt his lesson and has been periodically rabbit punched for getting into Tikka’s personal space. I began to fear that despite all the books telling me that cats and dogs could be friends it would never be the case at my abode.
However of late I have seen a miraculous change in Tikka. He’s started to play with Tashi (for a few minutes, on his terms of course!) and will roll over onto his back showing his tummy and allow Tashi to sniff him. Could it be that the ferocious tiger is starting to mellow towards his rough and tumble housemate? I will continue to watch with interest and perhaps dream again of them one day curled up together in front of the fire!
