The Truth about Catnaps

Cats love snoozing and sleeping.  On average an adult cat can sleep from anything between thirteen to eighteen hours per day!  An older cat will sleep for even longer and a kitten spends a huge amount of time sleeping as it expends energy very quickly.  However differences occur depending on the personality of your cat.  Some are more laid back than others.  You’ll also find that a cat that is left alone for long periods will tend to sleep through.

Cats are naturally nocturnal creatures so will tend to snooze in the day and be wide awake at night.  You can modify this by providing plenty of activity in the day.  Cats can also sleep very lightly for very long periods of time.  You’ll notice that a cat can wake up, wide eyed and alert in milliseconds.  Cats can also sleep with their eyes half shut!

Cats love a quiet cosy place to nap.  In high summer they will seek out shady hideaways whereas in winter they will make the most of any sun or snuggle up to the heater.  They tend to curl up in cold weather and nuzzle their faces between their paws to maintain their body heat.

As for a bed you can buy a lovely plush one at most pet stores but more likely than not cats will prefer to sleep on your bed.  There are comforting scents and aromas on your bed and allowing your cat to sleep there will strengthen your bond to them.  You’ll also discover they make excellent purring, furry hot water bottles!
