The Rules of Cat Play

In all animals there is an innate need and want to play particularly in those that haven’t reached maturity.  Cats use play as kitten to interact with and discover their environment.  They learn the rules of their feline world and develop their cat skills.

Kittens will spend a vast percentage of their waking hours playing. They will play with other cats, other pets, objects around the house and indeed with us humans.  As a kitten begins to open its eyes its ability to play starts to develop.  As they develop and grow so their playing becomes more refined.  Their muscles become stronger, they become more agile and their motor skills become more enhanced.  Kittens will love playing hunting games in particular.

When playing with a cat you will witness the fascinating act of the cat going through the motions of hunting.  In response to movement the cat will grow still and focussed on the moving object.  They will position themselves in a lying down pose ready for the ambush and with amazing precision pounce on its pretend prey.

You can stimulate this in your cat by using toys.  Kittens will love chasing balls in bright colours.  The movement of a ball rolling or bouncing across the floor will be too much for your cat to resist.  Toy mice will also stimulate your cat into play although I’ve found the wind up versions that move are best.  Finally you can have hours of fun with fishing rod toys that can be used to simulate moving prey.
