The Increasing Trend of House Cats
Our society has changed a great deal in recent years. Women match men on the career stakes, families are often dispersed and many people live in some form of social isolation. Keeping cats indoors is a growing trend and many outdoor cats have restricted access to the great outdoors. This means that a high proportion of cats live in very unnatural environments and do not have access to the stimulus required for them to act out species specific behaviour.
Many cat owners worry constantly about the well-being of their felines outside. The dangers of traffic, being lost or stolen and other cats has made cat owners over protective of their pets. Ten per cent of cats are now pedigree breeds and often their physical and emotional breed specific needs result in owners being recommended to keep their cats in.
Although this may seem sensible and a caring approach to cat ownership it leave your feline with a huge amount of time on his or her paws not able to act out any catty behaviour. Cat owners however are not giving their cat’s time out. We sleep with them, walke them up for a stroke and search the house if we’ve not seen them for a while. For an independent, self reliant creature this can be insufferable. This can result in aggression at times – hardly surprising really! You may think your cat is Mr Laid Back because he sleeps all day but this may be because he’s withdrawn as he has nothing else to do. The effects of our over-obessessiveness are stress, anxiety, spraying, obesity, over-grooming and aggressiveness. We need to understand the species and let go a little. Encourage them to go outside, respect their privacy and reject them when you’re busy. Cuddle and stroke when your cat is receptive and you’ll have a good healthy relationship with your cat.
