The Art of Individuality
When it comes to being an individual cats have been their and got the T-Shirt. Each cat has its own peculiar behaviour and personality traits. The standard cat like behaviour you expect will not apply to all cats. Some will defiantly break the rules! However don’t be fooled into thinking they are minim humans – this they certainly are not. They have their own feline characteristics, abilities and limitations. Although they may have individual personalities they will still be steadfastly ‘cat’. If you make the mistake of humanising them you are heading for some major behavioural problems.
Research has been carried out to see if pedigree breed have similar quirks and characteristics. It is certainly true that Persians can be more laid back whereas Siamese can be more active and athletic. However individuality is still prominent and you’ll get get-up-and-go Persians and coach potato Siamese. Scientists have even taken feedback from moggie owners to study the variations on cat behaviour from activity levels, to aggression to playfulness.
So how does this help you? Well, once you realise you can’t pigeon hole any cat into a certain behaviour trait you can start to accept your cat for what he is. You may have looked for a cat that loves affection but found he is aloof and independent or you may have expected your cat to be playful and active only to discover his favourite activity is snoozing on your favourite armchair. This is just the way it is! Accept it and enjoy it!
