Teaching Children to Respect Cats

One of my biggest irritations is listening to people call cats names and demonise then as if they were evil creatures.  In this day and age you’d think we’d got past the days of seeing cats as malevolent animals however time and again I come across people who persist in misunderstanding these beautiful creatures.  I often find it comes from a bad experience in childhood or the misconceptions of their own parents being passed down.

As cats and dogs play a massive role in our society it is our responsibility as adults to teach children to respect animals to avoid the frequent cat and dog cruelty that we hear about in the press.  This year there have been many reportings of cats being shot or attacked and it is well documented that if children develop a callous attitude to animals it can often lead to criminality and cruelty to humans later on.

Teach children by example.  As children are knowledge sponges teach them about the feline species and how to handle and deal with them.  Teach them the differences between a cat and a dog so they know what normal cat behaviour is.  Show them that being respectful of these creatures involves giving them space, paying attention to their health needs, allowing them play and rest.
