Teach Your Children to Respect Animals
It’s not so much about finding a cat that is children-friendly but more about teaching your child how to deal with cats and how to handle them. You can start teaching the basics very early on. Before the age of twelve you will always need to supervise your cat and child together. After the age of twelve your child should be old enough to handle your cat with respect.
Any cat will tolerate and even like children if they treat the cat well. It is easier however for a young cat or kitten to adjust to children that for an older cat that may never have experience them. Do not allow your child to torment the cat. Make sure they treat it with care and affection. Teach them how to hold him and explain that pulling its tail and ears will hurt the cat and make him dislike the child. Use a toy cat to explain what a child should not do and to help to teach them to handle a cat properly.
By handling your child in this way you prevent them being scratch or bitten by an angry disgruntled cat and being forever frightened of them. I know many people who wrinkle up their noses in disgust and fear when I talk of cats and the root source is always that they were badly scratched as a young child. It’s a shame that through poor education people grow into adulthood hating such a beautiful and loving creature.
