Stressed Out Cats
I have been concerned about my cat, Tikka of late. He’s started getting very stressed when around my partner. It was a bit of a puzzle to me but I started to research causes of stress and discovered some interesting facts.
Cats are sticklers for routine. They love it! It makes them feel safe, calm and secure in their home environment and often just a slight change can unnerve them for a while. I thought about what had changed in our routine of late and there had been a bit of upheaval. My partner had been away for a while and Tikka had been making the most of snuggling up to me at night. As soon as my partner came back Tikka would dart out of the room or run under the bed and hide.
I also read that cats are very sensitive to voices. I always talk to Tikka is a soft high pitched voice. I sort of match his chirrup when he talks to me. I hadn’t realised that this is exactly how you should talk to a cat. Loud, deep voices frighten them – which is exactly how my partner talks to him! He speaks to Tikka as if he were a dog in sharp, loud commands. Tikka’s eyes go wide with fright and he scarpers!
So after some explanation my partner is now part of a de-sensitising regime. He’s ‘trying’ to talk more softly to him although it does seem to hurt his manly pride to do so and he’s started feeding him with tuna to get close. Fingers crossed I can get them to become friends.
