Sneezing and Wheezing – How to Avoid It

Cat allergies can be a huge problem for sufferers and cause a great deal of friction in feline households when one of the family members becomes susceptible.  Never fear!  You do not need to send your beloved kitty packing!  Here are some tips for reducing the affects of cat allergies:

  • Do not let the cat sleep on the bed!   This is really important to give your symptoms a chance to subside.  If you do manage to get the, under control invite your cat back.
  • Keep the bedroom door shut.  Taking it one step further it is best to keep the cat out of your bedroom full stop.  It will dramatically reduce cat allergens such as hair and saliva to minimum and as an added benefit stop your feline friend waking you up at 5.30am as he or she is feeling a bit peckish!
  • Wash all cat bedding at in a 60 degree wash at least twice a month.  This helps to kill cat allergens and dust mites
  • Use air filters where you cat tends to hang out.
  • Choose a vacuum cleaner that is accredited by the British Allergy Foundation.  Many of these vacuums have been specifically design to pick up animal air and reduce the amount of allergen that are redisbursed into the air.  Hoover frequently the carpet, furniture, walls…everywhere!!
  • Use a steam cleaner to clean carpets on furniture.  This offers a chemical free way of killing off allergens, bacteria and mites.
  • Wash you hands after petting the cat and whatever you do not rub your eyes!
  • Clean your cat.  This won’t make you popular with your cat but it will significantly reduce allergens.
