During the 1800’s people were becoming aware that in the farmyard and backyard the cats that appeared there varied in colour, pattern, shape and the length of their coats. At the same time, people were visiting or working in countries across the world and many of them were making pets of the local cats which were shapes and patterns that had never been seen in the United Kingdom. Their new English owners started to bring these new breeds back to the UK. Breeds such as Seal Point Siamese from Siam were seen in the UK and from here numerous other breeds then on new continued to appear in the United Kingdom.
There was a need to control breeding and showing of cats. It was eventually agreed that a democratic organisation should be set up, one which would oversee the running of all cat shows and allow all smaller participating clubs a voice in the way in which the Cat Fancy (as it came to be known) does.
In 1910 the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy was formed with the aims of keeping the registers, licensing and controlling cat shows, looking after the welfare of pedigree cats and ensuring that the rules set up were not broken. The GCCF registers about 32,000 pedigree cats each year.
