Settling in a New Cat

When settling in a new cat to your home there are several steps you can take to ensure the adjustment period goes as smoothly as is possible. Whether you have bought your cat from a rescue home or from a breeder the ca or kitten is likely to find its first experiences of your home unnerving.  You’ll need some sensitive handling to help your new friend settle in.

Firstly pen up the home in small stages.  Initially confine the cat to one room equipped with a bolt hole which can be in the form of a cat igloo or somewhere similar to run and hide when they get too nervous.  Also include a covered litter tray ad a scratch post of around one metre high.  After a week, start to open up the cat’s access to the rest of the house.  This slowly, slowly approach will help to build your cats confidence.

Next, start to take the cat into the garden for short escorted trips. Again this allows your cat to become accustomed to its surroundings and to build its confidence in its new home.
If the area you live in is very built up and next to a main road you may find that a cat run is a safer option.  This is similar to setting up a bird aviary and allows your cat to venture outside safely.

If you want to have more than one cat always bear in mind that adult cats are staunchly territorial and may not accept another feline
