Scratching

Cats just love to scratch and pull their claws.  It’s a natural impulse as cats need to do it to exercise their claws and also to assert their dominance.  It is with complete swagger and confidence that Tikka, my ginger Tom, claws at his scratch post in the morning, leaning back luxuriously to the annoyance of my basset hound, Harvey and my shih tzu, Tashi.  Bearing in mind that both dogs are fenced into the kitchen behind a baby gate he has every reason to be cocky but there is a definite message being sent out across the ether to them and it says, ‘I rule the roost!’.

As scratching is a very necessary catty function you need to be prepared for it otherwise your cat will have no choice but to put his claws to use on your lovely furniture.  There is a dizzying array of cat scratch posts and mats available with equally dizzying prices.  Tikka has always been happy with a bog standard scratch post which has a shelf on the top for cat perching and territory surveying and a post for clawing.  Long ago there was also a cat toy dangling down from the shelf but Tikka has long since attacked and destroyed that so that a limp piece of string dangles there.

If you really want to go to town then there are scratch posts that have all sorts of lovely hideaways and tunnels for your cat – some stretching up to the ceiling.  Get what you can afford and in the early days encourage your cat to scratch there so her gets the idea.
