RSPCA Appalling Figures
I was appalled to hear the RSPCA figures on the radio today. Are we really a nation that calls itself an animal-loving country?
According to figures from the RSPCA released recently, over 27,000 animals were forced to fend for themselves last year. The percentage of animals that needed help has not decreased, and unfortunately this includes pets, including my beloved cats.
Many of this 27,000 were cats, dogs and other small pets saved from distressing homes with unloving owners. However, regardless of the size of animal, the RSPCA will still attend and rescue them although their resources are being stretched to the limit.
The exact figures for cats were not stated, nor was the percentage increase, although I would imagine as the figures for dogs being dumped increased by around 15 percent, it would not be too different for cats.
Today is the first day of RSPCA Week and the charity is publicizing its work in the hope that people will consider carefully before taking on pets such as dogs or cats.
A spokesperson for the RSPCA, John Tressider, said:
“The RSPCA works around the clock to rescue thousands of animals every year from a wide range of distressing situations and 2007 was no exception. From birds injured by oil spills to cattle suffering from foot-and- mouth disease, and cats in road traffic accidents to dogs simply abandoned by their owners, the RSPCA was on hand to help all types of animals whatever the emergency. During RSPCA Week we want people to spare a thought for the many thousands of animals needing the RSPCA’s help each year and in particular for anyone thinking about getting a pet to consider the responsibility they are taking on before doing so. Sadly we noticed a rise in the number of animals we rescued last year because they were callously abandoned. It is an offence to abandon any animal and there is never any excuse for doing so.”
For those who are considering buying a cat in the near future, they should consider how long a cat can live as it is a huge responsibility.
