Remember, remember Your Cat on Bonfire Night

In the run up to Bonfire Night the firework season can be a real headache for cat owners.  Cats Protection, the cat welfare charity, is inundated throughout the season by calls from cat owners with distressed or injured cats as a result of fireworks.  To limit the upset and trauma to your cat there are some simple guidelines you can follow:

As soon as it goes dark keep your cat inside and ensure you have a litter tray down if the cat normally has access to the garden

  • Minimise the sounds of fireworks outside by playing soothing music or putting the TV on.
  • To make sure your cat feels cosy and secure allow them to settle on a familiar, favourite resting area such as a warm bed or favourite armchair.
  • If you cat is timid, easily frightened or has just moved home they will be particularly sensitive to any loud noises and may panic and try to run away.  Keep all doors and windows securely closed to prevent this.
  • If you’re using fireworks yourself buy the handheld cascading types rather than those that make noises.
  • If you’re planning a bonfire keep it as far away from the house as possible however be aware that you will still adversely affect wild animals.
  • Check your bonfire before you light it to ensure no animals have taken shelter there.

A Veterinary Surgeon at Cats Protection, Jim Toy commented:

“Apart from the obvious physical damage by accidental or malicious contact with them, cats can be badly affected by fireworks noise and lights. Possible behavioural problems as a result of trauma could include house soiling and excessive grooming or aggression.”
