Oscar The Cat - Nursing Home Death Bed Companion
He possess the uncanny ability to sense when a patient is about to die literally a couple of hours before they do and sits with them through their final hours; his presence is both comforting and soothing. Over his time at Steere House Nursing Home, Rhode Island, Oscar has sat at the death bed of 25 residents.
Oscar will automatically move to the bedside of the elderly residents who have less than a few hours left. He curls up on their beds and keeps them company during their final time on earth. The sheer presence of Oscar is taken by all the staff at the nursing home as categoric proof of impending death. Due to his accuracy over the years Oscar’s behaviour has meant that it has allowed staff the time to contact immediate family and a priest to attend the patient’s final hours. In some cases he is the only soothing companion at the bedside of residents who do not have any relatives to be with them at the end.
There is a plaque on the wall of the nursing home which praises and acknowledges Oscar for his death bed companionship over the years.
To this day Oscar remains a permanent ficture at the nursing home and is much loved by residents, staff and visitors.
