October is Not a Good Time for Black Cats

October is the month when we start to get festive for the Halloween season.  The shops are overflowing with ghoulish outfits and spooky decorations.  I have always been partial to a good Halloween shindig myself however as a cat owner I’m quite careful in the weeks running up to Halloween.  Cats have always been associated with Halloween and witches but the cat that gets a particularly bad press is the black cat.  The animal shelters often report an upturn in the amount of black cat adoptions at this time of year, usually followed up with a return of these poor cats after Halloween is over.  Some shelters will not allow the adoption of black cats in October as a result.

Throughout history black cats have had a raw deal.  Starting as far back a Greek mythology black cats were associated with witchcraft.  It is told that Galenthias was transformed into a black cat and became known as the ‘Dark Mother’ or Mother of Witchcraft.  It was believed in the 12th and 13th centuries that witches chose black cats as their familiars and were thought to have the power to magic themselves into a cat form.  Shockingly in the 17th century witches were hunted and burned along with their cats.  And the superstitions live on in this century with many countries believing the black cat signifies bad luck although here in the UK a black cat crossing your path can bring you good luck!
