Natural Pain Management for Your Cat

If your cat suffers from an illness that causes him pain such as arthritis you may want to investigate more natural means of pain relief to give them comfort and to reduce the dependency on more conventional medicines that often have quite serious side effects.

Many joint aches and pains can be alleviates with the application of heat.  You can make an older cat’s life much more comfortable by keeping them warm.  Firstly make sure their favourite sleeping haunts are cosy and warm and out of the way of draughts.  Cats are quite expert at finding snugly corners so deck them out with warm blankets and cushions to maintain the heat.  There are cushions available with heat absorbing materials that create a super cosy nest and there are pads available that can be plugged in and act something like an electric blanket.

Another way of relieving pain is to use massage.  Cats love to massaged and stroked however you’ll have to make sure your cat is in the mood.  If you notice a switching tail then wait until your cat looks more receptive.  Use gentle circular motions.  This will ease aches and pains and get the circulation going.

There are alternative therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy and reiki that are all natural alternative to pain relief.  Seek out a therapist that specialises in dealing with animals however.  There are many vets that offer alternative therapies now.
