Living In harmony with Your Cat

Cats can have some strange habits and it pays to educate yourself as to what this behaviour can mean.  That way you understand your cat and live harmoniously together.

Scratching is a common habit with cats.  Scratching is instinctual to them.  They scratch to shed dead claw cells.  I often find the shells of Tikka’s claws at the foot of his scratch post.  They also scratch for territorial reasons.  By clawing they mark their territory in a visual way and also via scent.  Cats require a strong sense of domain and by scratching they feel secure.  Buy scratch posts and scratch pads to save furniture and encourage them to use them by scenting them with cat nip.

Meowing is a cat’s means of communication and they will use a variety of mews, chirrups and caterwauling to get some attention from you.  As to what their meowing means…well, you’ll need to do some detective work there.  If they are circling their food dish you can be sure they are hungry.  If they are sitting patiently or impatiently rather by the door they want to go out.  If you are focussing on something other than them it may simply be they are feeling neglected and want some fuss!
