Litter tray etiquette
I came home the other night to find that Tikka, my ginger cat, had desecrated the back bedroom. There was cat muck everywhere! His litter tray remained completely untouched. When I had a good look at the litter tray I noticed a faint odour. I think the heat of the past few days had made the litter quality deteriorate much quicker than it normally does and Tikka’s delicate nose must have picked up on it.
Cats will not use a litter tray if it’s dirty or smells. They are very clean creatures and will snub anything that is below their exacting standards. The consequence can be that you find little stenchy cat messages all over the house.
Another reason for cats snubbing their litter tray is that it’s located in a bad position. Perhaps it’s in a gangway – cats like lots of privacy when performing their daily ablutions. Or perhaps it’s too close to their food area. Find a position that’s easily accessible and offers some privacy. You can get litter trays with a cover and flap so that they can be completely in private – their own cat portaloo! Tikka’s not a big fan of those but my previous cat loved it!
