Learn to Give and Take with Your Cat
Here are some top tips for enjoying a healthy relationship with your cat:
Learn to ‘think cat’. When planning activities and his time when you are away get into his psyche. Cats like to hunt, forage, explore, climb and love the challenge of new things.
Give your cat access to private hideaways and respect the times when he wants to be alone in his hideaways
Don’t stare at your cat all the time. Some cats see this as a challenge but others will feel unsettled.
Allow your cat to set the pace of things – let him come to you. Don’t try to cuddle him and smother him when it quite plainly doesn’t suit him.
If he wants to curl up on your knee then let him do just that. If you can’t help but cuddle him, stroke him a little and then let him be.
Find other ways to interact rather than just cuddling. Play with toys and fishing rod games
Don’t feel you have to search the house for your cat if you haven’t seen him for a while. Leave him, he’s off doing his own feline things.
If you really don’t want to expose him to the busy road outside then how about securing the garden or building an outside enclosure for him. Your cat needs outdoor access. He’ll feel more in control and that’s an essential feeling for a cat.
Let him go outside and explore without you tailing him to make sure he’s OK. By giving him independence he’ll become more self confident.
