Kicking the Proverbial Cat
I’ve often cringed when I’ve heard people referring to kicking the proverbial cat. This come from a time when it was still acceptable to treat animals cruelly and in frustration people would give the cat a good kick. It does not conjure up a pleasant image and I look forward to the day when that saying dies out completely.
This has never been so reinforced as the past few weeks when myself and a friend of mine have all experienced what its actually like to kick your beloved feline by accident!
My friend recounted a tale last week of getting up in the middle of the night and still in slumber staggering around the bedroom only to stand on something warm and furry. It was poor Oliver, her ginger Tom, who squealed out in pain and shock and then scuttled away quickly down the stairs. My friend followed distraught that she had caused her little friend distress. All the cooing and soothing could not pacify him so she went back to bed downcast. The next morning she woke up to find him curled up at her feet – hurrah! She has been forgiven.
A very similar thing happened to me this weekend. Again sleepy in the morning I staggered to the bathroom and then nearly somersaulted over a sleeping Tikka, my ginger cat. He shot me a look of ‘How could you?!’ and bolted down the stairs. I spent the rest of the day plying him with tuna to make amends!
So if you have a cat when you get up in the morning shuffle as your cat may be blissfully sleeping in your path!
