Itchy Business

Cats can be prone to skin conditions but often itching and redness is caused by the common flea.  They are relatively easy to detect particularly on light coloured cats.  The easiest place to spot them is on the underside of your cat.  Check the chin, tummy and thighs for signs of fleas.  Fleas also leave dropping which look like black dirt so again if you notice this on your cat’s skin its likely he or she has got a flea infestation.

Fleas are easy to prevent.  You can get excellent flea treatments from you local vet which are applied on a three monthly basis to the back of the neck.  This is particularly important in the summer months when fleas are very prevalent in the grass where your cat likes to do a bit of stalking.  If your cat has already got fleas you’ll have to treat the house as well.  Fleas only stay on your cats body as long as it takes to lay eggs of which they lay thousands.  These fall onto your carpet and soft furnishing where they wait to hatch.  If you don’t keep your cat flea free you’ll soon have a full on infestation.
