It’s the Firework Season!

The cold nights are starting to draw in and its getting darker earlier and sure enough this weekend I heard the first round of fireworks being let off! It seems to get earlier every year…or am I just getting old? Anyway it alerted me that I need to be more vigilant with my cat Tikka how is apt to take an evening jaunt outside in the summer months which I have to start to curtail as autumn sets in.

Animals quite rightly do not appreciate fireworks. The noise is foreign to them and frightening and causes some cats great distress. In the firework season keep your cat in once it starts to get dark. This may be an unpopular decision with your feline but is better for their safety all round. There are some pranksters out there that think throwing fireworks at cats, and even worse, is funny and amusing. Also when alarmed a cat can bolt and get lost or take shelter in a stack of wood being prepared for a bonfire.

Keep all the windows and doors shut and try playing music or simply put the TV on to drown out the sound of the fireworks. If your cat feels the need to hide – then simply let them. Finding a snug hiding place will make them feel more reassured and secure. Keep a collar and tag on your cat at all times as they may bolt before you can shut the door and get lost. If possible make sure your cat is micro-shipped as this significantly increases your chances of being reunited.
