It’s All in the Name

Choosing your new cat or kitten’s name is not something to be taken lightly.  It can be a challenging time and I know many a new cat owner that has ran out to the shops and come back laden with baby name books and has scoured the internet for hours looking for inspiration.

Choosing your cat’s name is the first step in your new relationship with your feline bundle but if you initially come up with a blank you will be forgiven as it’s not as easy as it might seem.

Don’t go for some celebrity type long winded name.  If you do make sure it can be shortened to one or two syllables.  Your cat will have no chance of learning Trixibelle-Fluffy-Foo-Foo for example whereas you may stand more of a chance with Fluffy!  If you have other pets in your household you need to choose a name that is distinctive from the others.  For example my dog’s name is Tashi and my cat’s name is Tikka.  The end sound is easily distinguished between i.e. ‘ee’ versus ‘a’.

Also don’t base your cats name on how it looks as a kitten.  That cute fluffy bundle may develop into a butch powerful tom cat and ‘Tiddles’ might just not suit at that stage.  Tikka for example was a scrawny gangly ginger kitten, quite an ugly duckling, but developed into a sleek, beautifully almond eyed tom cat.  You just never know.  However remember its not quite a difficult as naming a child.  If you name your Tom cat ‘Twinkle Toes’ you won’t be subjecting him to years of psychological torment!
