Introducing Kitty to Baby
The arrival of a newborn baby to the household can be a very stressful experience to your cat. Cats like routine as they find it soothing and secure. When a strange new bundle arrives that seems to be distracting everyone away from him it can be frightening for the cat.
There are ways around this by using the art of de-sensitising. The first stage is to introduce the scent of the baby to the cat. You can do this by putting one of the babies blankets in the cat baskets so they grow to get used to the smell. The next stage is to start playing the sound of the baby crying on low volume when they are eating something they really love such as tuna or chicken. By associating the noise of the baby with yummy food that cat will start to have positive associations with the baby.
Then slowly but surely build up the volume and start to introduce the baby to the same room as the cat using the food technique. When baby is in the room pet, groom and play with the cat so they feel secure and again positive reinforcement is created.
