Grieving Your Cat

There is nothing more upsetting than when your cat dies either through old age, illness or due to an accident.  The loss of your pet cat can trigger overwhelming feelings of sadness and grief.  Pets of any kind become close family members and it is a fact that we humans are more likely to spend more on the healthcare of our pets than ourselves.  So it is little wonder when your cat dies it has a profound impact on you emotionally.

Unfortunately unlike the loss of a human friend the loss of your feline friend can often be unappreciated by others.  Do not let this lack of understanding make you feel belittled or guilty or stupid.  The loss of a pet can be devastating and you should allow yourself time to grieve and mourn the loss of your cat.  If your family are unsupportive then seek out those friends and associates who have experienced a similar loss.

You may find burying your cat gives you time and space to properly mourn your cat and allow other family members like the children say goodbye.  If this seems too depressing then find other ways to express your grief.

Some people choose to set up an area of remembrance to their cat – perhaps an area with some of your favourite photos.  Others choose to donate to a favourite charity.

You may be tempted to rush out and get a new cat straight away however give it some time.  You need to have fully mourned your old cat before you get a new one.  That way you are not introducing the new cat as a replacement but can appreciate it in its own right.
