Genetics or Experience?
Can dogs and cats really live in harmony or are their instinctual impulses always going to make it a risky business mixing the feline with the canine?
If you get back to biological programming dogs are predators descending form the wolf and they are programmed to chase and hunt anything that is small and quick moving. Obviously the cat falls very well into this category. On the other hand your catty friend is also an accomplished hunter and will often exercise his stalking on unsuspecting dogs even if they are bigger than him – so commences the battle between these two pet races.
However it is also true that an animal bases much of its behaviour on it first experiences up to two to three months. Therefore a puppy raised in a house of cats will get along just fine with his feline house mates and similarly a kitten brought up with dogs will not bat an eye at dogs. It’s easier to bring up a kitten with dogs rather than the other way round as cats are more territorial. So the puppy may well accept the cats but the cats may still be reluctant to accept him. If you introduce a kitten to dog that is very preadory however you will struggle.
