Furry Heat Seekers
There’s no denying it cats love heat and cosy corners. If there’s a stray sunbeam going you can bet that your cat will find it and enjoy soaking up the warmth, and if there’s a fireplace to be found you’re cat will be there. Now that the winter nights are drawing in and we’re experiencing the first of many chilly evenings to come I’ve definitely noticed a determined need in my cat to seek out warm cosy spots. My friend only commented this morning that she woke up this morning with lovely toasty feet and as she wiped the sleep from her eyes realised it was her cat, Oliver, who had abandoned his usual perch for the cosiness of her bed.
Cats build a keen sense of temperature from when they are born. They have heat receptors in their face which help them to seek out their mother when they are still so young that they their sight isn’t fully developed. As they grow into adulthood these receptors grow in sensitivity. However other temperature receptors covering the rest of the body are not as finely tuned and do not pick up on the extremes of heat as quickly. This is why cats can get themselves burned.
Make sure your cat has some safe and cosy perches to stay warm and secure. A thermal cushion is a great choice.
