Dreaded Ear Mites

Cats are particularly prone to ear mites.  They tend to pick them up out and about when they are stalking through the wilderness of your back garden or grassy areas.  A cat that has had the misfortune to become home to some pesky ear mites will become itchy and uncomfortable.

Ear mites are crab like parasites that take up resident in the ear canal.  They live on the ear debris and tissue and an infected cat is likely to have black dirty ears.  If you notice your cat itching and shaking his head and there is a black oily discharge in the ears its likely to be ear mites.

They can cause infection in the ear and if left untreated they can even cause the eardrum to perforate so get to the vets if you suspect a problem.  Your vet can quickly treat your cat and resolve the issue.  They usually supply eardrops which you’ll need to administer for up to a month.  This is because ear mite eggs can live for up to three weeks and it prevents second outbreak.

To prevent it from happening the best way is to keep your cat inside but for outdoor cats this isn’t an option.  Most good flea applications will help to discourage ear mites from infecting your cat.
