Do Not Declaw!
If you have ever considered declawing your cat think again! Here are some top reasons why this is not an option:
Declawing is a surgical procedure that removes a portion of the cat’s toes – it isn’t simply a trim of the claws! No matter how the procedure is carried out, there’s no two ways about it, it is major surgery and shouldn’t be considered without good sound reason.
If you have a cat that has scratching problems you sometimes here people say its better to declaw than put the cat to sleep. This is merely an excuse to pacify the owner’s prickling conscience. As scratching is behavioural the owner needs to take responsibility and address the cause of the problem.
Even if your cat is an indoors cat, a decaled kitty will struggle to defend itself from a dog, another cat or a naughty child if it doesn’t have its claws. Although he’ll still have his teeth, he may not be able to react quickly enough.
Declawing can be a very painful experience for your cat. It affects the nerve endings and take months to heal. The pain is reported to be excruciating with cats throwing themselves at the bars of their cages at the vets in an attempt to distract themselves from the pain.
It can lead to litter tray issues with cats finding it too painful to dig. Often they will opt for the carpet then to do their catty business. It can also lead to biting problems as their main form of defence – a quick scratch – has been taken away.
