Deter Chewing

Just like dogs, cats can destroy your belongings with chewing. You need to prevent this for two reasons, one, you need to protect your cat from the dangers of chewing and, two, you want to protect valuables from damage. There are numerous reasons for cats chewing ranging from teething in kittens, boredom to catlike curiosity.

One of the big dangers to your cat or kitten are electrical wires and cords. Chewing one of these can give your cat at best a nasty shock and at worst could kill them. Cats will more often than not chew due to boredom when you are away at work. Make sure there are plenty of toys around to occupy your cat include toys they can swat and pounce on and tunnels to explore. You don’t need to invest loads of money – some cardboard boxes with holes cut in them will keep your cat happily occupied for hours.

Remove the danger of electrical wires by covering them. Discourage your cat going near cords by covering the floor with double-sided sticky tape. Cats don’t like the feel of this on their paws. Alternatively you can get bitter apple spray to make the wires taste bad.

The other danger is houseplants. Some are toxic to cats so you need to get clued up on the greenery in your home. One alternative is to replace natural plants with artificial plants. Cats naturally like to chew on grasses so remove anything that is poisonous and perhaps put down some pots of cat friendly grasses.
