Choosing a Cat Sitter
If you’re going away for a weekend then you may consider getting someone round to pop in and check on your cat. Cats are independent and solitary creatures and often we can think they will be able to fend for themselves but I wouldn’t recommend this even for a couple of days. Cats still like to feel that there is someone there and from my own experience I have found that cats tend to wander further a field if there is no one resident in the house.
When choosing someone to cat sit the first port of call will be your friends and family. You need to be certain though that they will have enough time to spend with your cat. Simply running in and topping up the bowl will not suffice. Your cat will want some company and affection so make sure your selected cat sitter has time to do that.
In the past my next door neighbour has looked after my cat and we’ve found the best way has been for Tikka to move in next door while I’m away for a while. Some people don’t like the idea of this in case their cat likes their new home more than yours but I’ve never had any problems and I find it reassuring that Tikka has an alternative safe haven if I’m not around.
If you can’t find anyone then look into boarding your cat. Check the cattery out properly and reassure yourself the conditions are of a high standard. What ever you do, do not leave your cat to fend for itself.
