Cats in the Tub
Although cats are scrupulously clean creatures there will be times when your puss needs a bit of a dip in the bath - particularly if you have a long haired cat. Cats can get all manner of substances stuck to their coats and if your not sure what it is then its best to wash it off than chance them ingesting something that may be toxic. So make sure you are prepared.
Have a sweet smelling kitty shampoo to hand. Try and avoid anything that looks to chemically based or harsh and try to avoid using large amounts. Water will get rid of most of the grime.
Don’t throw your cat straight into the bath. Try and remove as much of the offending substance as you can with a cloth. This will make sure you don’t need to spend any longer than necessary in the bath and also will prepare you for your cats mood!
If he or she is looking a bit feisty and resistant to your attempts clean them get yourself suitably attired. Cat have claws and having had first hand experience of an enraged and soggy cat I can vouch for the need to get yourself as covered up as possible. If you don’t happen to have a handy body armour suit, then long sleeves are essential. Rubber gloves are helpful (although not entirely claw proof!) or garden gloves. The size of your kitty and the frenzy of their display of disapproval will determine whether you can dunk them in the sink or basin or whether the roominess of the bath is a safer bet. Make sure that you keep the door closed.
Try to have the bath water ready before you take the cat into the bathroom. The sound of running water will definitely set the alarm bells off! Run a shallow bath and use a cup to gently pour water over him. Then stay calm and in control keeping a firm grip without hurting him. Once he’s wet all over shampoo back, feet, tummy and tail. If you need to wash the face take extra care.
When rinsing take double the time it took to lather him up and then you are ready to dry. Towel him down and you’ll find your cat will do the rest! After that make a strong cup of tea (or something stronger) to settle your nerves!
