Cats Falling Prey to a Throwaway Society
The RSPCA say the number of pets being dumped in the UK has increased by nearly 25 percent in the past year. Are pets becoming victim to our throwaway society? Extremely alarming for us cat lovers is the fact that 50 per cent of the 7,347 animals taken in to animal rescue’s were our feline friends.
This is particularly worrying as cats have always been viewed as relatively low maintenance pets that can be let out without the level of supervision and exercise that dogs for example require. There are nine million cat owners currently in the UK.
The reasons for owners giving up their cats are becoming more fantastic, for example:
‘My cat doesn’t match the carpet.’
People even abandon pets such as cats, dogs and rabbits onto the streets for a few weeks while they go on holiday and then try to collect them on their return. There’s no sign of the trend abating with the RSPCA reporting 2,621 rescues from January to April this year.
Examples of dumpings are:
Harry, the three legged cat found near Bristol two weeks ago, who was microchipped. His owners had moved and are currently being traced. And a litter of kittens abandoned in London and found in a rubbish box.
There were nearly 150,000 animals rescued last year by the RSPCA including farm animal rescues and horses and ponies.
Tim Wass, from the RSPCA Inspectorate, urged:
“It is an offence to abandon an animal and there is never any excuse for doing so. If people have pets they cannot care for, for any reason, then help and advice is always available from the RSPCA.”
