Cats and other Pets

Besides the relationship cats have with dogs you need to bear in mind any other pets you may have as some may be viewed in the catty world as potential supper!

Rabbits

You’ll rarely have any trouble with a rabbit as they are too big to be viewed as prey.  Very often rabbits and cats can become friends.   If your rabbit is kept outside then they will rarely meet face-to-face.  Just be careful if you have baby rabbit as these are small enough for a cat to kill.

Guinea Pigs

In much the same way that rabbits won’t be considered lunch neither will guinea pigs.  They are simply too big.  Again be careful if there are baby guineas around as they resemble a rat to a cat.

Hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils

Never let your cat come into contact with these animals.  Even an indoor cat that has grown used to their presence may be taken over by instinct.  Keep these types of animal in a separate room behind a closed door.  A cage will not be protection enough.  A cat can knock a cage over.

Caged birds

Again these should be kept well out of reach as they are natural prey.  You can solve this by keeping the bird on top of tall book cases or by securing the cage to the wall on a metal hook.

Large birds

Large birds such as parrots can get on well with a cat.  In this case it’s more a case of protecting your cat from the bird!  Never leave them unsupervised as a large bird’s beak could injure your cat badly.
