Cats and Discipline – Never the Twain Should Meet!
Cats and punishment just simply do not mix. Your cat will never understand that you are trying to teach them how to be a good cat or that they have somehow upset you. They simply learn to see you as a predator rather than a friend. Rubbing your cats nose in its own urine or squirting a bottle of water at it will only create more behavioural problems for you. A cat when its restrained will fight ferociously. They simply do not understand what you are trying to do. All they no is that something much bigger than them is trying to make them do something they simply don’t want to.
I’ve seen many experts recommend squirting cats with water if they jump up somewhere they shouldn’t or if they urinate outside their litter tray. However if you take to using a substance that cats are naturally fearful off as a means of managing behaviour they are simply going to grow fearful of you. Also rather you than me if you need to bathe them for any reason!
When dealing with behavioural problems you need to take time to understand cats and then understand what has changed in the environment to make them behave badly. Once you find the change you will have your solution to the problem.
