Cats and Babies

Cats can often get a raw deal when it comes to new born babies.  Many believe that a cat will suffocate a baby as they feel jealous or due to the fact they can smell milk on their skin.  This can lead some families to even get rid of their pet cat – which is a shame as both reasons are completely untrue.

A cat is likely to enjoy being near a baby purely because this little bundle is so warm and as cats love to cozy and snug they may in their pursuit of warmth and coziness lay near to on even on top of the baby to keep warm.  It is not due to a want to harm the baby.

I know what my own cat is like with me and if he is in my room at night he will often choose to sleep very close to my face which will cause me to move so I can breathe freely.  Obviously a baby may not be able to move away so you need to protect the child from your cat’s innocent attempts to get warm.

Firstly you should never allow the cat to be alone with your baby and I would recommend keeping the nursery as a no-go area for your cat.  However as we all know cats are intrigued by closed doors and will go to great lengths to get it.  To protect against this eventuality you can buy cat nets that fit over the cot or pram.

Make sure your cat gets used to the baby’s scent and therefore doesn’t see the baby as a threat.  Cats are much more likely to accept a new arrival than a dog but you should still ensure you give the cat  love and attention to re-affirm the baby is not a threat.
