Cat versus Dog
I was watching The Dog Whisperer on Sky 3 recently and my favourite dog training guru Cesar Milan was weaving his magic with a dog AND a cat. The two adversaries were driving their distraught owners to distraction. The dog when it arrived had immediately gone into hunter mode and spent every opportunity hunting down the poor cat. The cat had started to hide away and skulk around the dark corners of the house to avoid being chased. Obviously this was no life for the cat and it was understandably upsetting the owners.
Cesar arrived as cool as a cucumber as ever and spent some time observing. The owners felt so sorry for the cat they were constantly rescuing it and keeping it separate from the dog. However Cesar assessed that this was actually feeding the problem. He started off with the cat being held by one of the couple and the dog being held by the other. If the cat or the dog went into attack mode they were assertively corrected until they returned to a calm state. Cesar does this by giving them a nudge to snap their attention away from the object of their distress.
It transpired that the cat was the more dominant character. Over time the two relaxed with each other and in true American style the couple bought a cat stroller ( a buggy for cats ) and started taking both the cat and dog out for a walk as a pack!
I’m not saying these methods are going to work for everyone but it was amazing to watch.
