Cat Territory

My friend was recently telling me about her cat, Oliver, a wiry, sphinx-like ginger tom who had recently taken to spraying the boundaries of the garden in a very methodical manner.  She was most perplexed and her partner was most irritated as he had just landscaped the garden building lovely new fences and laying a think green lawn.  Immediately it was clear to me that the week of upheaval and work in the garden had rather unsettled poor Oliver and he was frantically trying to re-establish his territorial boundaries from the other local cats.

Cats are excessively territorial creatures and if your cat is allowed outside this will extend to include the garden.  Cats spray to mark territory with their scent.  It sends out a message to other local felines that ‘This is my turf!’.  If a cat intrudes upon that territory a cat is likely to defend it in a magnificent display of puffing up, boxing and growling!

If spraying happen within the home you need to think about possible reasons why your cat feels the need to mark his territory.  It may be that you have moved a partner in or a new pet or you may have inadvertently moved the cats bedding or litter tray from its usual place.  Locate the source of stress and the spraying will stop.

After a week or two Oliver was happy with his kingdom again and calm was restored!
