Cat Talk

It is a common misconception that our cats prostitute themselves to us merely for some good wholesome grub and a warm cosy bed. However although for the most part cats and humans live together in a bemused and misunderstanding partnership, each not really knowing what the other wants, cats do try and communicate with us. We’re just not very good at interpreting it.

A common behaviour is for your cat to push his or her head into something be it the kitchen table, the corner of a box or your leg. This behaviour will increase if you have visitors who have pets themselves or who are in fact allergic to animals. Translated your cat is basically staking a claim to the items he or she nudges against by marking it with saliva and creating a scent that is soothing to him or her. The reason the cat will home in on your allergic friend (much to their annoyance) is because he’ll find it strange that there is no scent at all. To make him feel happier about this visitor he will try to get as much scent on them as possible so that they fit in with the rest of the house!

If your cat likes to sit by the window and observe life outside you will no doubt had heard some strange mewing and chirruping and seen much flicking of the tail often knocking your prize ornament off the ledge in the process! This odd performance is your cat displaying his hunting streak as he focuses on whatever he sees outside the window. Let him have a window ledge or two that is ornament free and has open blinds so he can chirrup and flick away without causing any damage. If you try to fight his hunting displays you’ll only end up with shredded blinds and broken vases. Also spend time playing with your cat. There are some great toys out there that he practices pouncing on.
