Cat Hair
As the weather heats up my cat, Tikka, has started shedding handfuls of ginger hair all over the house! It very tenaciously clings to all my clothes and furniture throughout the Summer months and drives friends and family to distraction when they visit. To minimize the hairy cat woman look here are some tips to help you through your cat’s moulting season:
- Make sure you brush the cat! Short haired cats are more likely to shed hair than their longer haired counterparts and in Summer months regular grooming can dramatically cut down the amount of hair that gets shed around the house. Your cat will love you for it too! Ask your vet or local pet store for advice on the best brush for your cat.
- If you can brush your cat outside but if not choose a hard floor or surface to brush your cat on. This way you can brush up any rogue hairs quickly and easily.
- Use the vacuum often and change the bag and filters regularly. The more care you take to keep your vacuum unclogged the more hair it will dispose of!
- Don’t forget the furniture either – hair gets everywhere and also attracts dust mites in the cracks and crevices.
- Hard wooden floors are great if you have cats. They are easy to clean and many of the sweeper products out there are ideal for collecting hair and fluff.
- An essential item of equipment is a pet hair roller. The roll of sticky tape magically collects any stray hairs that have made it onto your best suit trousers. Keep one a work too. The amount of times I’ve got to work and looked down in horror at a ginger haze clinging to my best black jacket!
- Try to keep the cat off the furniture. This is a tough one I know but if you have got the willpower to do it will dramatically cut down on hair ‘clingage’. If the idea of chasing your little feline sweetie off the couch fills you with dread then encourage him or her to curl up in a certain place and use a throwover to protect the chair or settee.
