Cat Ears

In the cat kingdom ears play a major role in communication unlike the human world.  They have around twenty to thirty muscles in their ear that control ear movement.  They have the ability to swivel their ears through 180 degrees and can also move them independently from each other.

There are five basic ear movements you need to know:

Relaxed Cat
In this state a cat’s ears will normally face forward and will be slightly tilted back.  In repose the cat will be simply listening out for interesting sounds.  When they detect a sound of interest the ear position will switch to alert.

Alert Cat
In alert mode the cat’s ears will stand more erect.  The cat uses the muscles in its forehead to pull them in.  If the ears twitch or swivel this is an indication that the cat does not recognize the sound and is anxious or unsure.

Agitated Cat
Nervous twitching of the ears can indicate agitation, conflict or frustration.

Defensive Cat
In defense mode a cat flattens its ears.  This has a practical purpose.  If a cat gets caught in a fight this position can save the cats ears from damage.

Aggressive Cat
This is the signal for danger, danger!  When a cat rotates its ears, flattens them slightly and the rear of the ear is visible from the front you need to be careful as this is the aggression pose!
