Building Trust

Building up trust with a cat is a long term project that cannot be rushed.  Even if you have had a cat for many years there may be times when your cat becomes stressed or mistrustful because of a change to his routine or circumstances.  It can be hard for a non-cat person to understand this and there may be occasions when you have a new partner or a lodger move into the house that needs to be coached on how to handle your cat and help you to settle the cat back down.

I’ve recently had this reinforced when my own cat became stressed when some changes happened to the household.  I had been looking after Harvey, my sister’s basset hound for some time as she was too ill to look after him herself.  A few weeks ago Harvey was ready to be reunited with her and left our home.  Around the same time my partner had recently moved in and due to all the upset to our normal routine my cat. Tikka started to behave strangely.  He became very timid and easily frightened and started to stay away from the house.  This upset me greatly and I realised that my partner was feeding the problem unknowingly.  With no previous experience of cats he spoke to him as he would a dog in loud commanding tones.

After some explanation we both patiently worked as a team to win back his trust.  We both took turns to put down his favourite food, a dish full of tuna and both spoke in soft tones to encourage him back into the house.  Slowly I am pleased to say he’s getting back to himself and is starting to stroll back into the house with confidence.
