Bonfire Night and Cats
Well, Bonfire Night is here although if you’re a cat you’d be forgiven for believing it was a month long event! There have been fireworks exploding around my neighbourhood for a good three weeks already and no doubt they will continue for a few weeks more.
Unlike us humans, cats do not look forward to firework season with the relish and excitement that we do. In fact I’ve never known a cat to like Bonfire Night full stop. The worst night so far has been last Saturday when someone across the road was having a great time with their own custom made fire work display! Unfortunately although they were very pretty the fireworks were tending to explode right above my house which let my poor ginger Tom in quite a dither. His head was on a virtual 360 degree pivot as explosion after explosion erupted in the November night sky.
To try and calm him I talked to him soothingly and put the TV on in an attempt to mask the noise. He’s been banned from going out after tea time for some weeks now anyway so I’d made sure he was safe and sound inside the house before the celebrations commenced. I’d also made a nice, cosy hideaway under the bed which is where he likes to steal himself when he wants some peace and quiet.
Tonight it will be much the same. So don’t go rushing out to enjoy the celebrations. Think about your cat and keep him company.
